A child in a marked-off area

The school’s plant and store room, in half-light: the pipes overhead, the boiler unit at the back, the cleaners’ mop bucket and a rack full of footballs, cones and hoops. The hallway door is open. In the middle of the room, wearing his school bag, is a child on his own. IRIS sees two things: where the area the school drew is, and that somebody is inside it.

What changes

What changes for the school team

Mid-afternoon, the mechanical room door has been left open after the cleaners came through, and there’s a child inside with a backpack still on. Those places aren’t dangerous for anything exotic: they’re dangerous because a child on their own has no business there. The boiler room, the equipment room, a service stairway, the gap behind the building. The school draws the zone on the image and no complicated sentence is needed: there’s a zone and there’s somebody inside it. The alert arrives while the child is there, not when somebody notices they’re missing from class. And often what it really teaches is something else: that this door is left open more than it should be.

What people usually ask

Who decides which areas these are?

The school, always. You draw the area on the image and set the hours: it can be closed all day, only during recess, or only outside teaching hours. We don’t decide which part of a school is a marked area, because every building is different and the school’s own team knows it. A line and a time band, and that’s it. And there are places where no area is drawn because there’s no camera and there never will be: classrooms, restrooms and locker rooms.

Does the alert identify the child who went in?

No. IRIS does not identify any minor: it does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store who anyone is. The alert says there’s a person inside that area and for how long, and that’s already enough to go and look. It can’t be used — and must not be used — to open a disciplinary report on a child: whoever arrives sees who it’s and decides what to do.

What if it’s the custodian or someone from maintenance?

Then the alert is closed as soon as somebody looks at it, which is what happens most of the time in these areas. It can be tuned by schedule — the storeroom closed during recess and open in the afternoon — so the rule doesn’t fire while the people who are meant to be working are working. What we don’t do is tell people apart by who they are: the rule is the area and the hour, and the rest is checked by whoever gets there.
