The court with no adult in it

Recess in a big playground: the main court full of children playing, the tables and the play area at the back, the building on the right. It’s an ordinary playground at an ordinary hour. Inside the court — the zone the school has marked — there isn’t one adult: the two people sitting down are on the bench at the far end, outside the zone. IRIS does not know who anyone is. It tells an adult from a child by size, counts how many are inside and reports that somebody is missing there.

What IRIS understands

What it recognizes in this scene

  • playground zone with no adult inside
  • children playing in the zone
  • game in play
  • play area at the back

What this camera measures

An alert says something’s happening. The reading says how much.

  • 148Children inside the zone
  • 0Adults inside the zone
  • 2Adults the school’s own rota asks for
  • 5 minZone uncovered for
  • 3 / 4Playground zones with somebody in them
  • 11:12Time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client’s measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

the schoolyard zone the school has marked is left with no adult inside for longer than the school has set

Then

  1. alert the front office and the assistant principal, naming the zone that has been left uncovered
  2. say how many children are inside that zone at that moment
  3. log the time, to see whether the gap keeps happening at the same one
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when the schoolyard court is left with no adult in it for more than two minutes.»

What changes

What changes for the school team

Nobody opens that gap on purpose. A shift that overlaps badly, someone who has to go in with a child who has fallen, a change of period: five minutes in which no adult is left in that part of the schoolyard. Today nobody sees it until something happens, and then the awkward question — who was on duty? — arrives late and at the worst possible moment. IRIS looks at the zone, not at people: it looks at whether somebody is covering it and reports the gap while it lasts, which is when you can still close it by sending someone. This is a problem of how the rota is organized, and it is fixed with information, not with blame. Which is why you talk it through with the whole teaching staff before installing it, not afterward.

What people usually ask

Is this a way of keeping tabs on the teachers?

No, and that deserves to be said plainly. IRIS identifies nobody: it tells an adult from a child by size, and that’s where it stops. It does not know who that person is, it does not record who was on which shift, it does not count anybody’s hours and it does not assess anybody’s work. What it looks at is the zone: whether somebody is covering it or not. A playground with no adult is a fault in how the rota is organized, not in a person, and the conversation it opens is with the whole teaching staff, before anything is installed.

Does IRIS recognize the children in the schoolyard?

No. IRIS does not identify any minor: it does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it keeps no record on any student. It counts bodies inside a zone and tells an adult’s size from a child’s; that’s all it needs in order to know somebody is missing there. It can’t be used to write up a child, because it doesn’t know who it would be talking about.

What if the adult is right then dealing with a child who has fallen over?

Then that’s exactly what the alert is telling you: nobody is left in that zone because whoever was there had to deal with something else. The alert doesn’t say anyone is doing a bad job; it says there’s an uncovered zone right now. With that, the assistant principal can send somebody else for those five minutes, which is all that was needed. And how long is too long, which zones are marked and who gets the alert is decided by the school, not by IRIS.

A different case every time

You set the rule once. IRIS applies it every time.

And the best part

What happens in the small hoursdoesn’t have to wait for the morning report.

IRIS understands it there and then and tells whoever is on call, with the camera and the time. The next day there is nothing to reconstruct: it’s already written down.

Tell us your problem and we’ll say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

A person answers, the same working day.
