The whole break in the same spot

A covered walkway between the yard and the building, seen from above. Down the far end two classmates come along talking, and a child with a backpack walks past against the wall. On the other side of the colored railing, the rest of the group is playing on the court. On the right, sitting on the ground against the wall in the shade, is a child with their knees pulled up and their bag beside them. They have been there the whole recess. IRIS sees that: a place and a length of time. Nothing else, and it claims nothing else.

What IRIS understands

What it recognizes in this scene

  • child in the same spot
  • classmates walking past
  • someone passing by the wall
  • empty bench
  • the game, on the other side

What this camera measures

An alert says something’s happening. The reading says how much.

  • 22 minin the same spot for
  • 15 minthreshold set by the school
  • 4recesses in a row the same
  • 9people who walked the walkway
  • 0people who stopped
  • 11:12time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client’s measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a child has been in the same spot longer than the school has set and has not gone near any group

Then

  1. let the pastoral lead know, with the camera and the spot — no name, no record
  2. say how long it has been and how many recesses in a row the same thing has happened
  3. log the time and the place, so the team can see whether it is a one-off or a habit
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a child spends the whole recess in the same spot without going near any group, and tell me too if it repeats day after day.»

What changes

What changes for the school team

The eleven o’clock recess ends and everyone heads back to class. The child making noise on the court has been seen; the one who stayed sitting under the porch, knees drawn up, hasn’t: he doesn’t bother anyone, he doesn’t call out, and recess is over. The teacher on duty would see him if she could be everywhere at once, and she can’t. This is a fact about a place and a clock — this spot, this long, this many recesses in a row — that reaches the team so somebody can go over and talk to him. Nothing more. It doesn’t say anything is wrong with that child, it doesn’t label him and it opens nothing against anyone: it exists so an adult sits down beside him, which is the only thing that solves this.

What people usually ask

Does this detect that a child is sad or being left out?

No, and saying otherwise would be a lie. IRIS sees two measurable things: that somebody has been in the same spot for a long time, and that it repeats. It doesn’t read faces, it doesn’t read moods, and it doesn’t know whether that child is alone because he wants to be, because he fell out with someone, or because today he feels like reading. The reading doesn’t say anything is wrong with him: it says it’s worth somebody going over to ask. The interpreting is done by the teacher, the form tutor or the counsellor, with what they know about that child and that class.

Is it recorded who that child is?

No. IRIS does not identify any minor: it does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it keeps no record on any student. The alert says there’s a child at that spot and for how long, and that’s as far as it goes. It can’t be used — and must not be used — to open a disciplinary report on a child.

What if he simply likes being on his own?

Then nothing is wrong, and the team will know as soon as somebody goes over. That’s why the alert isn’t an accusation or an alarm: it’s a note for someone to walk past. It’s also why the school sets the threshold, not us: if a school decides it only wants to hear about it when it repeats over several recesses in a row, that’s how it is configured. A rule that fires every day about everybody is one nobody looks at a week later.

Demo · IRIS at work

You set the rule once. IRIS applies it every time.

You will see a summary of the interface, played step by step and hands-free. Each round starts with another case. The complete tool doesn’t fit in a demo.

And the best part

If the camera doesn’t show it,IRIS doesn’t see it. We say so up front, not afterward.

No camera sees through a wall or in complete darkness. We’d rather show you where the limit is, and place what you have well, than promise something that never appears on screen.

Tell us your problem and we’ll say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

A person answers, the same working day.
