A closed circle in a corner

What changes for the school team

These things don’t happen in the middle of the court. They happen in the corner nobody can see from where the duty teachers stand, which is why the team finds out late and almost always from parents. What changes here’s the timing: an adult who walks over while it’s happening changes the situation; the same adult hearing about it on Thursday doesn’t. The alert goes into no file and points at nobody: it goes to somebody crossing the yard and standing there. What happens next is decided by the people at the school, who are the ones who know those children.

What people usually ask

Is this bullying detection?

No, and calling it that would be a lie. Bullying is a pattern that repeats over time, with intent behind it and real harm, and that’s judged by a trained person talking to the children, the families and the rest of the class. A camera sees none of it. What IRIS sees is a situation with a shape: a closed circle around somebody, in a specific corner, for a while, and that same corner coming up again. That’s a checkable fact and it’s the only thing that can be claimed. It could be an argument, it could be a game, it could be something worse: the person who walks over tells the difference. That’s why there’s no label here — none about whoever is inside the circle, none about whoever forms it — and why the box is drawn around the whole group and never around one child. There’s an alert so an adult goes over, and that’s where it ends.

Does the camera say who did what?

No. It doesn’t, and it can’t. IRIS does not identify any minor: it does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store who anyone is. And here the box is drawn around the whole group, never around one child: the situation detected is the circle, not the people. It can’t be used — and must not be used — to open a disciplinary report on a child.

What if it was a game and it was nothing?

Then an adult walked past, saw it was nothing, and that was that. This isn’t a system failure: it’s precisely what it is for. The rule is written by the school — which corners, how long, at what times — with its own team and counsellor, and it gets tuned as they learn. What’s never done is filing “that circle” as a black mark against anyone, because it isn’t one. And it’s worth remembering where there’s no camera: not in classrooms, not in restrooms, not in locker rooms.
