How the counting works

Counting isn’t something you ask for. You draw a line.

Counting isn’t asked for in words: it is drawn. Asking in plain language is for searching and for describing a situation, but a count needs to know exactly where the line runs and in which direction, and only a stroke drawn on the image settles that. Here there’s one line drawn across the threshold of the classroom door — cross it inward and you’re added, cross it outward and you’re taken off — and one area painted over the whole room. Those two things give the only number that matters: how many people are inside right now. Because the line is drawn once and doesn’t move, Tuesday’s count and Friday’s come from the same place and can be compared: it’s repeatable and it can be audited. And IRIS people counting is approved by the Centro Español de Metrología, Spain’s national metrology institute, so that the figure is the right one is vouched for by an independent third party, not by us. That approval covers people counting; not the whole product. That approval is Spanish and it isn’t equivalent to any U.S. certification: we say so up front and not at the end.

What changes

What changes for the school team

Today, when a building gets emptied, a classroom is called clear because somebody walks in, looks around and walks out. With twelve classrooms, three hallways and a gym, that adds up to minutes; and in a real emergency minutes are all you have. With the line drawn, whoever is coordinating the evacuation sees on a screen whether the room is empty or whether twenty-one people are still in it, space by space, and knows where somebody has to go in and where nobody needs to. That’s all this camera does. It doesn’t take attendance, it doesn’t say who is missing and it doesn’t measure anybody’s work. And it doesn’t show up on its own: the school is the one that puts it there, and the staff and the families are talked to before it goes up, not afterward.

What people usually ask

Is this taking the register? Can it be used for attendance control?

No, and it can’t be. IRIS gives a number — how many people are inside this space — not a list of names. It does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not know who any child is and it keeps no file on anybody. If there are twenty-four people in the room, what the system knows is “twenty-four,” and that’s where it ends: it can’t say who is missing, because it doesn’t know who is there. The register is taken by the teacher, and that doesn’t change. This number exists for one reason only: so that in an evacuation you know whether the space is empty.

Can it be used to keep an eye on the teacher or to assess her work?

No. IRIS doesn’t measure the work of anybody on the staff, doesn’t log anybody’s hours and doesn’t report what any person in the room is doing. It counts bodies inside a drawn area: it doesn’t know who is teaching, it doesn’t tell anybody apart by name and it sends the principal not a single line about any individual. A count of people per space can’t assess anyone, because it says nothing about anyone in particular; and anybody trying to use it that way would find there’s no figure to hang it on. This camera is there for an evacuation, and the number it gives is good for that and nothing else.

Does a camera have to go inside the classroom at all?

Often it doesn’t, and that’s worth saying out loud. A classroom is the most sensitive place in a school, and plenty of schools will decide against a camera inside and count at the classroom door, in the hallway or on the stairs instead. That’s a perfectly reasonable decision and the system works just the same: the line is drawn wherever the school wants it, and the headcount for the floor comes out of the same arithmetic. The school is the one that puts the camera up, and the first step is talking it through with the staff and the families, before anything is installed. If that conversation ends in “not inside the classroom,” then not inside the classroom.
