Four cleaning jobs in a single frame

Mid-afternoon on the walkway, next to the terrace. In the middle of the path there is a spill, the stain already spread, with napkins and cups scattered around it; two people walk round it so as not to step in it. To one side, a service trolley loaded with uncleared trays has been standing for twenty-two minutes. To the other, a shopping trolley abandoned outside its area. On the terrace, tables nobody has cleared and a customer complaining. Four different things, in a single frame.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • spill in the walkway
  • scattered litter
  • service trolley loaded with uncleared trays
  • shopping trolley outside its area
  • terrace tables nobody has cleared
  • customer complaining to the waiter
  • people walking round the stain
  • the nearest bin

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 9 minSpill standing for
  • 4Open jobs
  • 22 minTrolley standing for
  • 3Trolleys outside their area
  • 13:05Time

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

When a spill or an abandoned object appears in a walkway

Then

  1. send the nearest cleaning team the exact spot
  2. record the time it appeared and the time it was cleared
  3. add the job to the day’s facilities log
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if there is a spill in a walkway, a service trolley standing for more than fifteen minutes, or a shopping trolley outside its area.»

What changes

What changes for operations, for asset management and for security

None of these four things is an emergency, and the four together are tomorrow’s review. Today they get fixed when somebody walks past and notices; with IRIS, the facilities manager sees the alert with the exact spot and sends whichever team is closest. And at the end of the month he has what nobody has today: where the mess happens, at what time, and how long it takes to clear. That is what you use to tune the cleaning shift, and that is where the money is.

What people usually ask

Is the inside of the toilets watched?

No. In toilets what is monitored is the entrance and how often the service passes, never the inside. That is: how many people go in and out, and how long since the cleaning team last came through. There is no camera inside and there will not be one. Those two figures are enough to know when it is time to clean, which is exactly what this is for.

How does it tell a spill from a shadow on the floor?

By how long it lasts and by what people do. A shadow moves with the sun; a stain stays put and people start walking round it. IRIS raises the alert when something appears on the floor of a walkway and is still there a while later. And it does not stop at the alert: it records the time it appeared and the time it was cleared, and that is the figure you use to tune a shift.

Is this a way of monitoring the cleaning staff?

No, and it is worth saying plainly. IRIS measures the state of the floor and how long a job takes to close, not what any individual does. It identifies nobody, recognises no faces and follows nobody around the mall. What comes out of this is a map of where mess happens and at what hour, and it is used to put more people where they are needed, not to point at anyone.

Simulation · how IRIS works

A new case each time. Always the same screen.

It plays by itself and shows one case from start to finish. It is a summary: the real screen has far more functions than fit in this box.

  1. Cameras on the map
  2. You draw an area
  3. What passed shows up

And the best part

“The white van, Tuesday afternoon.”That is enough to find it.

You type it the way you would tell a colleague, and the matching minutes come back, each with its camera and its time. You do not need to remember the exact moment.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
