How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
Asking is for searching. Counting is for measuring. And they are not done the same way. Here there is a line across the escalators — whoever goes up is added upstairs and subtracted downstairs — and three zones drawn on the floor, one per level. A line cannot be described in a sentence: it has to be drawn, and that is what makes the figure repeatable and auditable. And here that weighs more than anywhere else: this is people counting approved by the Spanish Metrology Centre, under the NeuralPax licence. What is approved is the measurement, not the whole product.

What changes
What changes for operations, for asset management and for security
At an event, capacity is the whole conversation: how many people fit, when an entrance closes and when it opens again. Today that figure is defended by eye. With an approved count, the head of security holds a safe capacity in front of whoever has to authorise it, and operations knows which floor is filling up while it is happening, not the next day. We do not claim our accuracy. We certify it.

What exactly is approved, IRIS or the counting?
The counting. What the Spanish Metrology Centre has approved is the measurement — counting people — and nothing else: not the whole product, and it is worth saying so plainly. IRIS includes it through NeuralPax, a separate licence. That is why the number can back a capacity figure in front of whoever has to authorise it, which is exactly what you need on the day of the event.
What is the point of knowing the split between floors?
So you can decide sooner. A total says nothing: five thousand people spread over three floors is an ordinary afternoon, and the same five thousand squeezed into the atrium is something else. With one zone per level you see which one is filling up, and you open another entrance, or send people up the other escalators, while it is happening.
Does IRIS know who is inside?
No, and it never will. IRIS counts bodies crossing a line and bodies inside a zone. It does not recognise faces, does not compare them with anything and does not follow anybody around the mall. The number is a total, not a list of people. That is exactly the difference between measuring capacity and identifying somebody.
