One person on their own in the yard
The yard at exercise time: most people are in the middle of the court, a group of four standing and talking, two sitting at the concrete tables on the left and several walking along the far wall. Over on the right edge, sitting alone on the bench against the wall, is one person apart from everyone else. IRIS sees that someone is on their own in that part of the yard and how long they have been there. It does not know who they are and it does not interpret how they are.

What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the facility
The yard is big and whoever is watching it cannot be everywhere at once. When someone stays apart from the others and does not move from there the whole time, what is needed is not an alarm: what is needed is for somebody to walk over and talk to them. Today that happens if an officer happens to look towards that bench at the right moment. IRIS assesses nobody, says nothing about how a person is or what they are going to do: it reports that one person is alone in the area the facility marked and has been there longer than the facility set. The judgement, the decision and the care stay with a human being. The only thing that changes is that they can go over sooner.

Does IRIS interpret how that person is, or what they are about to do?
No. IRIS does not assess anybody's state, does not read moods, does not detect intentions and does not score any person. It does not diagnose and it does not predict. All it detects is a matter of place and clock: one person is alone inside an area the facility marked, and has been there longer than the facility set. And it replaces no protocol of the facility and no professional: not the healthcare team, not the rehabilitation staff, not the officers' own attention, which is what actually looks after a person. All it does is get somebody over there sooner.
Does IRIS know who that person is?
No. It does not recognise faces, does not compare them against any database, does not store who anyone is, does not follow a particular person around the facility and keeps no record on anyone. It detects that there is a person, not which person. And that is why this camera is no use for disciplining anyone: being alone in the yard is not an offence, and the alert is not a report. It is a request for somebody to go over.
Who decides which area is marked and how long is too long?
The facility, always. Which part of the yard is marked, at what hours, and how many minutes must pass before the alert goes out is written by the institution using its own judgement, and can be changed whenever it likes. We bring no factory-set rule and no list of suspicious places, and the rule is a sentence anyone can read and argue with. It is worth tuning properly: if the alert fires every time somebody sits down in the sun, it stops meaning anything.
