A ring closes in the yard
The exercise yard in full daylight, with close to a hundred people spread over the concrete. In the middle a tight ring of two dozen has closed, shoulder to shoulder, while those on the outside push inwards; all around, the rest are standing apart, minding their own business. Lower down, several people are sitting on the long concrete benches. There are officers in the yard, on the walkway above and in the corner watchtower, and a door stands open in the far wall.

The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
the number of people per square metre at one spot in the yard goes past the limit the facility has set and stays there
Then
- alert the control room with the camera and the spot in the yard where people have bunched up
- alert the officer who is out in the yard as well
- log the time and keep the video
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when the people in the yard stop being spread out and all bunch up in one spot, because a closed ring hides what is inside it and you can't see in from the tower.»
What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the facility
The yard is the hour of the day with the most people together and the least staff for each of them. Today it is handled by watching, and watching has two problems: from ground level a ring of twenty people hides whatever is inside it, and from above you have to be looking at that exact spot at that exact moment. With hundreds of cameras and two people in the control room, that cannot be held up for an hour straight; it is not a failing of the officer, it is that nobody can. With IRIS the alert goes out while people are still gathering, with the exact spot in the yard, and that buys minutes to walk over and look instead of finding out when someone already has to be pulled apart. The limit is set by the facility, and it can be different in the middle of the yard and in the meal queue.
What people usually ask
Is this counting people or identifying them?
It is counting. IRIS counts bodies and sees where they are standing: it does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database, it does not store who anyone is and it does not follow a particular person around the yard. To know that too many people are together at one spot you only need to count, and that is all it does. It cannot be used to sanction a particular person.
What if the ring is a game, or someone telling a story?
Often it is, and there is nothing wrong with that. The alert does not say there is a problem: it says that at that spot there are more people together than the facility has decided to tolerate there. The one who looks and decides is a person. And the limit is tuned per area and per time of day, because the meal queue and the middle of the yard are not the same thing.
Can you find out who was in the ring?
Not through IRIS. What you have is the video of the yard at that time, exactly as you would have without IRIS, and that video is reviewed by the facility's own staff under their own rules. IRIS puts no names on anything, builds no lists of people and keeps no file on anyone: all it says is where and when too many people came together.

We won't just tell you. We'll show you.
It is a summary of the real screen: it plays by itself, step by step, and shows only the path of one case. The actual tool has far more than fits in here.
- Checks the whole system
- Flags what is failing
- Puts it on one screen

Who is watching the cameras of a whole branch network?
13 cases: 12 raise an alert when something happens and 1 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
Casinos
How long does it take to find a hand played two hours ago?
12 cases: 9 raise an alert when something happens and 3 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
Video is late by definition:you watch it once the thing has already happened.
IRIS tells you while it is happening, with the camera, the time and what it saw. Arriving in time changes the end of almost any story, and no new cameras are needed for that.
Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
