Mid-morning at the berth. The ship is still moored and still loaded, but the crane is not working: the spreader hangs empty and still above the deck. Down on the quay, three trucks are waiting with nothing on their trailers. Nobody is moving in the working strip. IRIS does not raise an alarm about this: it measures it. It counts the minutes the quay spends without a move and how many trucks pile up meanwhile.

How the counting works
Counting is not something you ask for. You draw a line.
This is drawn, not asked for. On the image you trace one line across the lane the trucks come in and out by, and two zones: the strip of quay under the crane and the lane where they wait. Whatever crosses the line is counted; whatever stays inside a zone is timed. That is why the figure comes out the same every day and can be checked again: it depends on the line, not on who is looking.

What changes for whoever answers for the terminal
A port's performance is measured by the time ships spend waiting and alongside, and that time gets argued over in every meeting with the shipping line without anyone bringing the number. With this camera, whoever runs the terminal walks in with a table: minutes of quay stopped, the hour they stopped, and how many trucks were waiting in each stretch. The recorded move is confirmed by the terminal's own system; the camera adds what could be seen and the exact minute.
What people usually ask
Does the camera know why the crane stopped?
No. IRIS measures what can be seen: how many minutes the quay has gone without a move and how many trucks are waiting meanwhile. The cause — no truck, a shift change, paperwork that has not arrived, a breakdown — is supplied by whoever watches the video or reads the terminal system. What the camera adds is the exact minute it stopped, which is precisely what nobody writes down and nobody remembers later.
Does this number replace the terminal system?
No. The recorded move comes from the terminal system and should stay there. IRIS works alongside it: it adds the picture of what was happening on the quay, and the time. When the system says there was no movement for half an hour, the camera shows whether the quay was empty, whether trucks were waiting or whether the spreader was hanging still. They are two different records that back each other up.
Why is counting drawn instead of asked for in words?
Because asking is for searching and counting is for measuring, and they are not done the same way. A line cannot be described in a sentence: it has to be drawn on the image, because the number depends on exactly where it passes and in which direction. That is why a drawn figure is repeatable and can be audited, and why people counting could be certified by the Spanish Metrology Centre. This camera counts trucks and moves, not people, so that certification does not apply here.
