Someone is swimming towards the quay
Midday in the basin. A person is swimming towards the quay wall, a few metres from the steel ladder set into it. A rigid inflatable comes in from the left. Up on the quay, a guard and a service vehicle; at the back, the berthed ship. To an ordinary camera all of this is just water moving. What changes for whoever answers for the terminal
The waterside is the flank almost nobody watches, and the one that throws up the most useless alerts: every wave, every reflection and every seagull looks like movement. That is why water cameras end up switched off. If the only thing that arrives is this — someone swimming towards the quay, a small boat pushing into restricted water — the alert gets answered. And the guard knows which stretch of wall to look at before he gets there.

How does IRIS tell a swimmer from a wave?
By shape and by path. A wave appears, breaks and goes nowhere; a person swimming keeps a silhouette and moves in one direction for seconds on end. IRIS looks at that difference, not at raw pixel change, which is what ends up getting water cameras switched off. Which stretch of water is watched, and when, is decided by the port.
Does it also detect small boats?
Yes. A rigid inflatable, a jet ski or a rowing boat entering the restricted water are all the same to the rule: something that should not be there is approaching the quay. IRIS alerts with the time and the video. What it does not do is read hull numbers or identify anybody on board.
Does it work at night?
It depends on the camera, not on IRIS. With a thermal camera, the heat of a person in the water shows up with no light at all. With an ordinary camera you need the quay lighting. IRIS works with the image it is given: if a human eye would see nothing on that screen, the camera is the wrong one for that spot, and that is settled before it goes up.
