Bare-headed among the machines

The inside of a large construction site, the ground churned up with tyre ruts. A group of people is walking across it: the first has a white helmet and a hi-vis vest on, and the two behind him are bare-headed with nothing reflective. Further back, three more are crossing, also without helmets. To their right a site dumper loaded with rubble is moving with its operator in the seat, and top right an excavator is working beside the spoil heap.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • no helmet
  • bare head
  • no helmet, no vest
  • loaded dumper
  • full kit on

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

somebody on foot walks into the area where the machines are moving without a helmet

Then

  1. alert the site foreman with the camera and the exact spot where that person is
  2. alert whoever is directing the machines as well, so the manoeuvre can be stopped
  3. keep the seconds of video with the timestamp, for the next day's safety meeting
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when somebody walks across the area where the machines are working without a helmet on, and tell me while he is crossing — there is no second chance there.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the site

A machine on the move has blind spots the operator cannot see into, and the person on foot does not always realise he is standing in one. Today that is covered by the banksman, if there is one, and by each crew's habits, which change with every subcontractor. And when the helmet is missing too, what is lost is the only thing that protects against the knock that can no longer be avoided. With IRIS the alert reaches the foreman and the person directing the machines while somebody is crossing, with the camera and the spot, and there is still room to stop the manoeuvre. By the end of the week you can also see where people actually cross, which is almost never where the traffic plan says. IRIS does not stop the machine and does not replace the banksman: it warns, and a person decides and acts.

What people usually ask

Can IRIS stop the machine?

IRIS does not stop the machine. It is not wired to the dumper or the excavator, it does not touch their controls and it does not send commands to any equipment. What it does is warn people: the foreman and whoever is directing the manoeuvre, with the camera and the spot where the pedestrian is, while it is happening. Stopping the machine is an order given by a person, and it stays that way on purpose: on a site, the one who knows the context is the one standing there.

Does IRIS recognise the worker who has no helmet on?

No. IRIS does not recognise any worker and does not identify anyone. It sees that there is a person on foot inside the machine area and that this person has no helmet on; it does not see who that person is, it does not recognise faces, it does not compare them against any database or against the subcontractor's crew list. The alert says 'someone with no helmet in the dumper's path', it does not say a name, and that is why it cannot be used to discipline a specific worker. It is there so somebody walks over and fixes it before it is too late.

What if the person has his back turned, or is half hidden behind a spoil heap?

If the person has his back to the camera, IRIS still detects him: you do not need to see a face to know a helmet is missing. What is genuinely hard is when the body is hidden behind a spoil heap, behind a dumper skip or in the dust a machine throws up, and there it may not be seen. That is why the zone is drawn over what the camera sees well, and where blind angles remain you add a second camera instead of pretending one covers everything. We would rather say where it does not reach than promise it reaches everywhere.

Simulation · how IRIS works

A new case each time. Always the same screen.

It plays by itself and shows one case from start to finish. It is a summary: the real screen has far more functions than fit in this box.

  1. The rule gets built
  2. It goes to every camera
  3. Published, it watches alone
  4. And then it fires

And the best part

There are nights of thick fogwhen the image gives you nothing. We do not dress that up.

Backlight, heavy rain, a street lamp that has blown. IRIS works with what the camera puts in front of it; when there is no image, it says so instead of inventing an answer.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
