Bare-headed among the machines

What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the site
A machine on the move has blind spots the operator can’t see into, and the person on foot doesn’t always realize he is standing in one. Today that’s covered by the banksman, if there’s one, and by each crew’s habits, which change with every subcontractor. And when the hard hat is missing too, what’s lost is the only thing that protects against the knock that can no longer be avoided. With IRIS the alert reaches the crew lead and the person directing the machines while somebody is crossing, with the camera and the spot, and there’s still room to stop the maneuver. By the end of the week you can also see where people actually cross, which is almost never where the traffic plan says. IRIS doesn’t stop the machine and doesn’t replace the banksman: it warns, and a person decides and acts.

Can IRIS stop the machine?
IRIS doesn’t stop the machine. It isn’t wired to the haul truck or the excavator, it doesn’t touch their controls and it doesn’t send commands to any equipment. What it does is warn people: the crew lead and whoever is directing the maneuver, with the camera and the spot where the pedestrian is, while it’s happening. Stopping the machine is an order given by a person, and it stays that way on purpose: on a site, the one who knows the context is the one standing there.
Does IRIS recognize the worker who has no hard hat on?
No. IRIS does not recognize any worker and does not identify anyone. It sees that there’s a person on foot inside the machine area and that this person has no hard hat on; it does not see who that person is, it does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database or against the subcontractor’s crew list. The alert says “somebody with no hard hat in the haul truck’s path,” it does not say a name, and that is why it can’t be used to discipline a specific worker. It’s there so somebody walks over and fixes it before it’s too late.
What if the person has his back turned, or is half hidden behind a spoil heap?
If the person has his back to the camera, IRIS still detects him: you don’t need to see a face to know a hard hat is missing. What’s genuinely hard is when the body is hidden behind a spoil heap, behind a dumpster or in the dust a machine throws up, and there it may not be seen. That’s why the zone is drawn over what the camera sees well, and where blind angles remain you add a second camera instead of pretending one covers everything. We would rather say where it doesn’t reach than promise it reaches everywhere.
