The lifting zone gets coned off and taped, and it works until somebody is in a hurry. A supplier coming over with a question, a visitor, a tradesman cutting through because it’s quicker: ten seconds, and in ten seconds he is under the load. Today only whoever happens to be looking sees it, and the crane operator is looking at the pack. IRIS watches the marked-off zone for as long as the lift lasts, raises an alert the moment someone steps into it, and says whether they walked in with their kit on or without it. The alert reaches the site manager while it’s happening, and he can stop the unload. He stops it, not IRIS.

Can IRIS stop the crane or block the unload?
IRIS can’t stop the crane or block the unload. It doesn’t command any machine and it doesn’t operate anything. It raises an alert while the situation is happening, with the camera and the image, and the one who decides to stop is the crane operator or the site manager. It doesn’t replace the banksman or the health and safety plan either: it exists so the warning reaches, in time, the person who can actually stop the lift.
Is this for disciplining whoever walks in without a hard hat?
It isn’t for disciplining anyone. IRIS detects that a person is inside the marked-off zone and whether they have their kit on; it does not detect who that person is. It does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store anyone’s identity. The alert points at a lift that needs stopping, not at a particular worker.
How does IRIS know where the lifting zone is?
IRIS knows where the lifting zone is because somebody draws it on the camera image: you mark the taped-off area and that’s it. You can move it the day the truck unloads somewhere else, and you can have several zones on the same camera. It’s a line drawn on a picture, not building work: the person in charge does it in a moment.
