Mid-morning, checkout time. The luggage room is full, a bellhop crosses the lobby with a loaded shopping cart and a case leans against the concierge lectern. At the desk, a guest waits with her suitcase and someone has left a holdall on the counter. On the left, among the lounge armchairs, a suitcase stands upright with nobody beside it: whoever left it’s no longer in frame. The rule

a bag has spent more than ten minutes with nobody beside it, or leaves the luggage room with a different person from the one who dropped it off
Then
- alerts the concierge desk with the camera, the time and the spot in the lobby where the bag is
- saves the video from the minute the bag was left alone, not from the moment of the alert
- keeps tracking the bag and closes the alert when somebody picks it up

What changes
What changes for the manager and the front desk
Lost luggage means a complaint, and a complaint means front-desk hours, an angry guest and sometimes a free night. What changes is the order: the lobby knows how many bags there are, where they’re and how long they have been waiting. When a case is left on its own, somebody knows right then, not when the guest comes back asking for it. And the boundary doesn’t move: the lobby is a public thoroughfare and that’s what’s watched, never the rooms and never the bathrooms.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know whose suitcase is whose?
No. IRIS identifies nobody and doesn’t know whose bag it is. It sees an object somebody was carrying, sees that it’s been left on its own, and counts the time. If a different person from the one who put it down picks it up, it says so: it doesn’t know who either of them is, only that they aren’t the same person. The name comes from the front desk, not from the camera.
Does this camera look inside the rooms?
No, and it can’t. Rooms, bathrooms, staff locker rooms and any private area are out of scope: no camera goes there, so there’s nothing to look at. This camera sees the lobby, a public thoroughfare in plain view of everyone, and what it sees there’s luggage and movement.
What if the lobby is packed?
That’s normal at checkout time, and it triggers nothing: IRIS doesn’t raise an alert for a bag sitting on the floor next to the person carrying it. It raises one when the bag is left alone and the clock starts. Here’s the limit: if somebody walks past and hides the case for a few seconds, the clock keeps running; if a shopping cart hides it for a full minute, IRIS loses the bag and treats it as a new one when it reappears. That’s why the camera goes where the whole floor is visible, not in a corner.
