How the counting works

Counting isn’t something you ask for. You draw a line.

There are two lines and one area drawn on the image. One line crosses the entry on-ramp and the other the exit: everything that crosses them is added up, so you know how many people use the intersection and at what times. The area is painted over the hatched zone of the diverge, that striped triangle where nobody should ever be, and it measures how long a vehicle stays there. None of this can be asked for in a sentence: the line and the area are drawn once onto the frame and stored, and that’s why one month’s figure can be compared with the next.

What changes

What changes for whoever runs the road

Nobody measures the intersection, and yet that’s where a highway’s problems gather. The engineer who has to decide whether to lengthen the acceleration lane or change the signing of the exit has been doing it for years with one week of counts and with what drivers tell him. With two lines and one area he knows how many come in, how many go out, when the intersection fills up, what share of the road’s traffic uses it and how long there’s a queue on the on-ramp. And from the same camera he gets an alert when someone stops in the hatched area or drives in the wrong way up the exit — the two maneuvers that end in a head-on crash.

What’s the point of counting a intersection?

So that decisions are made with data instead of impressions. Knowing how many vehicles come in and go out, at what times and what share of the road’s traffic that intersection represents is what tells you whether the acceleration lane has become too short, whether the exit needs another sign further back, or whether the line on the on-ramp is reaching the mainline. Without that figure the argument is settled by seniority; with it, it is settled by what actually happens at that point.

Why raise an alert for a car stopped in the hatched area?

Because nobody should ever be there. The hatched area of a diverge is the piece of asphalt that separates the exit from the mainline: whoever stops there, almost always because they hesitated and changed their mind about leaving, ends up stationary between two streams of traffic and in the worst possible place to be seen. That’s why this maneuver produces an alert and not only a number: the operator has to be able to send someone and light up the sign upstream.

How is the line on the on-ramp measured?

By counting the vehicles that pile up on the on-ramp and measuring how long that build-up lasts. The camera sees how many cars are stopped or barely moving while waiting to merge, and the figure that comes out is the time the on-ramp spent waiting in line in that hour. It isn’t a measurement of each vehicle’s speed: it’s what can be seen in the picture, which is the line and how long it takes to clear.
