It’s been raining since the night before, and at six thirty in the morning the slope sheds earth and stone onto the right-hand lane. The first car arrives two minutes later. Let us be clear: IRIS doesn’t predict when a slope will come down, and anyone who promises that’s lying. What it does is see the material the moment it’s on the roadway, at any hour and without anyone having to drive past. And because the camera always looks at the same framing, the maintenance manager can compare today’s slope with last week’s and see whether it has moved. The value is in the time: closing the lane now, and not when the first car meets the stones head on.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS warn before the landslide happens?
No. IRIS doesn’t predict landslides or anything else: it sees what has already happened or what’s happening. What it does do is two useful things: raise the alert as soon as there’s material on the roadway, and show whether the slope has changed compared with earlier images of the same frame. That second one is a reason to go and look, not a prediction.
How does it know the slope has changed?
By comparing the scene with itself. The camera is fixed and always looks at the same piece of hillside, so you can put one image next to another and see where the earth has moved, where a new crack has opened or where vegetation has come down. If the camera shifts or the framing changes, that comparison stops being valid and the reference has to be redone: it’s a real limitation and we say so.
Does this replace inspecting the slope?
No. The inspection is done by a technician who goes there, looks and touches, and no camera replaces that. What changes is the order of the visits: instead of walking every slope on the same calendar, the maintenance manager starts with the ones that have changed. There’s still an inspection; you just get sooner to where it matters.
