How many cars drive up the hill, and how many park on the shoulder

The same road, measured instead of watched. A line is drawn across the roadway: cross it going up and you’re heading into the hills. Another runs across the path down to the picnic area. And two zones are painted: the table area and the stretch of shoulder where people park once the parking lot is full. From that you know how many cars go up each hour, how many come down, how many stay on the shoulder and how many people are down there. IRIS counts vehicles and counts bodies: it doesn’t know who is inside any car.

What IRIS understands

What it recognizes in this scene

  • road up into the hills
  • car parked on the shoulder
  • service four-by-four
  • person crossing the road
  • person walking along the edge
  • information panel for the area
  • table in the picnic area
  • wooden rail along the shoulder

What this camera gives back

Nobody gets an alert here. Here you get numbers.

  • 124 / h+38Cars going up per hour
  • 92 / hCars coming down per hour
  • 17Cars parked on the shoulder
  • 63People in the picnic area
  • 11:00 – 13:00Busiest climb slot of the day
  • 12:20Last updated

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client’s measurement.

How the counting works

Counting isn’t something you ask for. You draw a line.

Two lines and two zones, drawn on the image. A line can’t be described in a sentence: you have to decide where it runs and in which direction, and only a stroke on the image settles that. It’s drawn once and there it stays, which is why a Sunday in May and a Sunday in August are measured exactly the same way and the number can be audited. Here cars are counted as well as people, so this camera doesn’t carry the Centro Español de Metrología, Spain’s national metrology institute, certification: that covers people counting and nothing else, and putting it here would be stretching it. That approval is Spanish and it isn’t equivalent to any U.S. certification: we say so up front and not at the end.

And also, one rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

there are more than twenty cars parked on the shoulder

Then

  1. alert whoever manages the area, with the number and the time
  2. put the day’s curve alongside, to see if it is still rising
  3. save the slot in the season report
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if there are more than twenty cars parked on the shoulder.»

What changes

What changes for whoever goes out, whoever decides and whoever justifies it later

First Sunday in May, eleven in the morning, and the park warden has nowhere left to put anyone: the parking lot filled at ten and the shoulder is lined with cars up to the bend. A natural area dies of its own success before anybody has a number. With the real access curve per hour and per day, laying on a shuttle bus for that Sunday stops being a gamble, and closing the barrier when the parking lot is full can be justified to anyone who complains. The shoulder figure is the one that matters most: cars parked on the shoulder of a hill road are cars narrowing the passage a fire engine has to come up. Measuring it is what lets you fix it before it is needed.

What people usually ask

Are the plates of the cars going up read?

No. This camera counts: a car crossing the line is an object on wheels that adds one. There is no plate, no identity and nothing that could be matched against anybody. To know whether a shuttle bus is needed on Sunday, the number is more than enough. Reading plates is a different thing, it is done with a different camera and needs its own legal basis, and that isn’t what’s here.

Why isn’t counting parking lot tickets enough?

Because the problem starts precisely when the parking lot fills up. From then on the tickets stop rising and people keep arriving: they park on the shoulder, on the track and in the ditch, which is exactly what no ticket records. The camera sees both at once, the parking lot and the shoulder, which is why the curve doesn’t flatten on the day it matters most.

Can the same camera count and alert on smoke at the same time?

Yes, and it’s the normal case. They are two different things running on the same image: counting is drawn and alerting is described in words. They are split into two pages here because they’re two different uses asked for by different people — whoever manages visitors and whoever answers for a fire — but the camera is the same and so is the video.

The real interface, step by step

This isn’t a video. It’s a slice of the real screen.

A summary of the real interface, played hands-free. You see one case from start to finish; what you don’t see are the other screens, and there are many.

  1. The alert fires
  2. You open it
  3. You confirm or dismiss

And the best part

No building work, no trenches, no new cabling:the cameras are already up and already looking.

What changes is what happens to the picture. It used to be stored and never seen; now it’s understood while it happens, on the same equipment you bought years ago.

Tell us your problem and we’ll say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

A person answers, the same working day.
