Walking in with the helmet on and the visor down
Mid-morning, a high-street branch. The glass door swings open and someone walks in with a full-face helmet on and the visor down. The motorcycle is parked at the curb a few feet away, visible through the same glass. To the left stands the entrance security arch; at the back, an employee is serving a customer at the counter. The branch has a simple written rule: inside, faces uncovered. IRIS sees that the rule isn’t being met and says so the moment the door closes. Nothing else.

What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the branch network
A siren doesn’t fix this: a discreet alert on the branch screen three seconds after the door closes does. Most of the time it’s someone who arrived by motorcycle and forgot to take it off, and all it takes is asking them casually before they reach the counter. That’s the whole gain, and it’s the difference between a polite sentence and a situation nobody knows how to start. The rule had always been there; what was missing was somebody seeing it kept, in every branch at once.
What people usually ask
Is IRIS saying that person is about to do something?
No, and it matters to get this right. IRIS doesn’t judge intentions, doesn’t infer them and doesn’t hint at them. The branch has a rule — inside, faces uncovered — and all IRIS does is see that right now it isn’t being met. The most likely explanation is in the picture itself: there’s a motorcycle parked at the curb. That it’s almost always that isn’t a failure of the system; it’s exactly what it is for, because the rule is met with one polite sentence and that’s the end of it.
And what about a face mask, a hard hat or a scarf in winter?
The branch writes the rule, not us. It can ask only for full-face hard hats, or for covered faces in general, and it can be tuned by hours, by branch or by time of year. It can also be turned off where it makes no sense. It’s the same as with any rule: if it gets in the way more than it helps, it is changed in a minute and applies from the next minute in every branch. What can’t be tuned is a rule that doesn’t exist.
Does IRIS recognize the person coming in?
No. IRIS does not recognize faces, does not compare them with anything and keeps nobody’s identity; and here what it sees is precisely the opposite: that there is no face to see. The frame has its limit too, and that’s worth saying: this camera covers the door and the first few feet of the lobby. What happens at the counter, in the cash-machine area or at a second entrance isn’t covered, because those are other cameras. One camera isn’t good for everything, and anyone who says otherwise has never installed one.

Why did the line stop?
237 cases, and in every one of them IRIS raises an alert when something happens. You see each image as it is, and then with what it understands on top.
Parking lots
How many spaces are open right now?
15 cases: 9 raise an alert when something happens and 6 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
IRIS only sees what the camera shows.Where we don’t reach, we say so.
No software fixes a lens pointing the wrong way or covered in dust. Before promising anything, we say which cameras are in a state to see what you’re asking of them.
Tell us your problem and we’ll say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
