What changes for whoever answers for the plant
Tipping too close to an edge that gives way is one of the documented accidents of this sector, and from a dump truck cab the edge is not visible: only the mirror is. The supervisor finds out once it has already happened. With the camera, the alert goes out while the truck is still manoeuvring, with a picture of the exact spot. And the video is kept to review the marking: where the barrier was, whether it was still standing and whether it was respected.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know whether the edge is going to give way?
No. IRIS does not predict. It sees where the vehicle is in relation to the marked line and alerts if it goes past. Whether the ground holds is a geotechnical question, answered by instrumentation and inspections. What the camera adds is that the dangerous manoeuvre is seen while it happens, and stays recorded with its time so it can be reviewed afterwards.
What if somebody moves the barrier?
The camera sees it. The marking is an object in the image, and IRIS can alert if it disappears, falls over or is moved. The alert line is drawn on the image and gets moved as the bench advances, which happens every week in a quarry. Whoever moves it leaves a record of when they did.
Does it work at night or in dust?
It depends on the camera, and that is the honest answer. With enough light, or with a thermal camera, yes. With a dense cloud of dust in front of the lens, the image degrades just as a person’s eyesight would. That is why the edge is marked as well as watched: the camera reinforces the procedure, it does not replace it.
