An oversize boulder jams the mouth, and clearing a primary crusher means half a day, a crane and people working on top of the machine. With the camera, the panel operator knows while the boulder is still on the feeder: there is time to stop the feed before it goes in. And if it goes in anyway, the video and the time remain, which is what lets you find out which blast or which bench that material came from.

Against a physical reference that is in the picture itself. The crusher mouth, the width of the feeder and the roller pitch have known dimensions and they do not move. IRIS compares the rock with that reference and gives a width. This is not a guess or an abstract calculation: it is a measurement against a fixed part of the equipment, which is why it can be repeated and audited.
Does it also catch material that should not be there, not only big boulders?
Yes, if it can be seen. A piece of drill steel, a tyre, a length of hose or a drum among the rock stands out clearly by shape and colour, and that is the kind of thing that breaks a jaw. What the camera cannot see is what is hidden inside a boulder or mixed into the fines. That is what the metal detector and the screen are for, and the camera works beside them, not instead of them.
Does IRIS stop the feeder when it sees a boulder like that?
No. IRIS alerts; stopping the machine is a person’s decision or the plant control system’s job, not the camera’s. The alert reaches the panel with the image and the measured width, and there the operator decides whether to cut the feed, pull the boulder out or let it through because it will pass edge-on. IRIS does not replace the plant control: it works beside it and adds the picture and the exact minute.
