Only a white line separates the pedestrian from the forklift

A worker in a white helmet and hi-vis vest walks along the edge of the pedestrian aisle painted green, the walking-figure marking behind him. To his right, in the vehicle lane, a counterbalance forklift comes forward with a tall pallet of boxes. All that lies between them is the white line on the floor. The driver has the pallet in front of him and cannot see what is on the other side. Another truck is moving in the background.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • pedestrian in the green aisle
  • counterbalance forklift
  • loaded pallet
  • forklift driver
  • pedestrian aisle marking

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 1people in the pedestrian aisle
  • 2vehicles in frame
  • 10:26time of the encounter
  • 4 stime sharing the stretch
  • 18encounters in this stretch today

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a forklift and a person are in the same stretch of aisle at the same time

Then

  1. raise an alert for the shift supervisor
  2. save the video of the whole encounter
  3. add the encounter to the count for that stretch, by hour and by day
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when a forklift and a person are in the same stretch of aisle at once, and count how often it happens each day.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

People and forklifts crossing paths is the accident that repeats most in a warehouse, and there are almost always warnings first: the same stretch, the same hour, the same manoeuvre. IRIS alerts when a person and a vehicle share a stretch, and it also counts how often it happens. With that figure the manager can change the route, fit a mirror or move the replenishment slot. Nobody has to wait for an accident report to find out.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS measure the distance between the person and the forklift?

It works with zones, not with loose metres. The stretch is drawn on the image and IRIS alerts when a person and a vehicle are inside it at the same time. It is repeatable because the zone is drawn over the real floor and does not move.

Is the encounter count good enough to compare months?

Yes. Encounters are always counted with the same drawn zone and the same camera, so March can sit next to April. Change the zone and you change the series: that is why it is left fixed and documented.

Can it tell a forklift from a pallet truck or an AGV?

Yes, if they look different in the image. The rule is tuned with video from that same warehouse, not with examples from somewhere else. What IRIS does not do is read the vehicle number or know who is driving: it detects the type of vehicle, not the person.

The real interface, step by step

This isn’t a video. It’s a slice of the real screen.

A summary of the real interface, played hands-free. You see one case from start to finish; what you do not see are the other screens, and there are many.

  1. The rule gets built
  2. It goes to every camera
  3. Published, it watches alone
  4. And then it fires

And the best part

With two screens you watch. With twenty you look without seeing.

It is nobody’s fault: it happens to everyone. IRIS watches all twenty at once and only interrupts when something deserves a person’s attention.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
