CAM-245

A unit moves down the line with no cover on

Mid-morning on final assembly. Identical units come down the belt one after another, each on its green tray. Every one has its metal top cover fitted. One does not: where the cover should be there is an open black gap. Nobody has noticed. The operator checking the line walks alongside writing on her clipboard, and her colleague at the bench builds parts with a tablet in his hand. IRIS compares each unit with the ones ahead of it and sees that this one is missing a part.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • unit with no top cover
  • unit with its cover fitted
  • operator checking the line
  • robot in the assembly cell
  • sub-assembly bench with the parts bins

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 184Units past this shift
  • 2Units flagged this shift
  • 3Units past since that one
  • 5People in shot
  • 10:24Time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a unit passes the check point without its top cover fitted

Then

  1. alert the line manager with the camera, the time and the picture of the unit
  2. save the video of that unit going past, and of the three before it
  3. note where on the belt it is, so it can be pulled before packing
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a unit comes down the line without its top cover on.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

A unit without its cover that reaches the end of the line has to be stripped, rebuilt and tested again. If it reaches packing, the box gets opened. If it reaches the customer, it comes back. The line manager usually finds out hours later, when nobody remembers which unit it was or where it went. With the camera he gets the alert while the unit is still on the belt, with the exact time and the picture. Pulling it off there takes a minute.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know which part is missing?

Yes, if the part can be seen from outside. IRIS compares each unit with the ones ahead of and behind it in the same order and flags the one that does not match: no cover, no trim, no label. A screw that ends up inside the unit is invisible to any camera. That is what torque checks and the end-of-line test are for, and IRIS works alongside them, not instead of them.

Does this replace the end-of-line quality check?

No. The final check keeps doing its job: testing, measuring and signing off. What changes is the timing. IRIS raises the alert while the unit is still on the belt, with the camera, the time and the picture, so it comes off before packing instead of after. It is an extra net placed earlier, not a replacement for the one already there.

Does the camera identify who was supposed to fit the cover?

No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognise faces or match them against any list. It sees situations, not people. What it detects is that a unit went past without a part, at what time, and it keeps that image. Who was at that station is in the shift record, not in the camera.

See it for yourself

A new case each time. Always the same screen.

It plays by itself and shows one case from start to finish. It is a summary: the real screen has far more functions than fit in this box.

  1. The hour, as a grid
  2. You look where it's dark
  3. You jump to that minute

And the best part

A recording gets watched when nothing can be done.An alert lands while there is still time to act.

IRIS raises the alert while it is happening and says where: the camera, the time and the images from that moment. With that, whoever is on duty is still in time to act.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
