A sinkhole gives no warning: the pavement gives way, and from that moment every car that arrives is at risk. If it opens at four in the morning, the street stays like that until somebody manages to call and explain where it is. IRIS cannot see what is happening under the asphalt or predict when it will collapse, and that is worth saying plainly. What it does do is raise the alert as soon as the pavement has changed: the duty engineer and the local police get the image and the position at the same time, and the street is closed that same night. The time gained is exactly the time the street would have stayed open with nobody knowing.

Do the cameras have to be replaced to detect a sinkhole?
No, in most cases you do not need to change the cameras to detect a sinkhole: IRIS builds on the street cameras already there, and what it adds is not more resolution but the understanding that the road surface has changed and that vehicles and people are close by. During the project, each camera is checked to see whether its framing and quality work for that spot, and the ones that do not are named. Replacing a camera is the exception, not the starting point.
Does IRIS see the collapse before a car goes in, or only afterwards?
IRIS sees the collapse once the road surface has already changed, not before. IRIS reads the image: it cannot know what is happening under the asphalt or predict when it will give way. What does change is reaction time: a hole that opens at four in the morning on an empty street is picked up right then, not when the first car arrives. For what happens underground you need other sensors.
Can IRIS close the street automatically?
IRIS does not close the street by itself, but it can send the command to systems that are already connected: variable message signs, traffic lights, the rising bollard or barrier on that street. And if you would rather a person confirmed the closure before it takes effect, it is set up that way from day one.
