What changes

What changes for operations, for the passenger and for maintenance

The alert is not for the technician, who is already working: it is for the person who can send eighty passengers to the lift next door or open the escalator at the far end. Today nobody calls to say 'there are eighty people standing in front of a shut-down escalator', and that is why the plug lasts as long as the whole repair. With the alert, the terminal reacts in the first minute: somebody goes and stands there, points at the lift, and the problem stops being a problem even though the escalator is still out.

What people usually ask

Doesn't the escalator itself already report that it has stopped?

Many do, and that signal goes to maintenance. But maintenance is already there: the technician does not need telling. What no escalator can report is that eighty people have gathered in front of it and have spent three minutes not knowing which way to go. That is what the camera sees, and that is what the person who can send them to the lift needs. They are two different alerts for two different people.

Is this good for anything beyond the moment?

Yes. Every episode leaves a record of which escalator it was, how long it was down and how many people gathered in front. Over a year that becomes the list of which units fail most, in which time slot and with how many people affected. With that you prioritise a replacement, change the shift for preventive maintenance and justify the spend with something firmer than a feeling that 'that one is always broken'.
