In water, everything depends on the first hour. A slick spotted when it is already on the sand takes weeks to clean and ends up in the press; spotted while it is still a spreading surface, it is boomed off as it happens. The alert comes with the shape of the slick and the direction it is moving, which is exactly what you need to decide where the booms go, and with the video of the previous minutes, which is what later lets you reconstruct what was in the bay before. What the slick is, an analysis says, not a camera.

Does IRIS say what the slick is or where it comes from?
No, neither of them, and saying otherwise would be inventing. A camera sees a surface changing colour, shape and position. Whether that is a hydrocarbon, an organic discharge or a mat of seagrass torn loose by a storm is what an analysis says, and no video can say it. Nor where it came from: the video can show which boats were in the bay before it appeared, which is a starting point for an investigation, not a conclusion. The conclusion is drawn by a person.
And a cloud shadow on the water?
It looks very similar for a second and then separates on its own. A shadow moves at the speed of the cloud, keeps its size and has no clean edge; a slick grows from a point, changes shape and leaves an edge. The rule looks at how it evolves, not at a single frame. And even so, the alert comes with the video, because dismissing it by looking costs twenty seconds and failing to dismiss a real slick costs a closed beach.
Is the recording usable as evidence?
That is decided by whoever has to assess it, under the applicable rules, and it is not for us to say. What we can say is what there is: a video clip with its timestamp, saved at the moment the event happened and not reconstructed afterwards. And one thing worth saying out loud in this sector: that same sequence serves as well to support a complaint as to take it apart. We do not keep it to prove anybody right.
