Two people go through and only one showed a badge

Half past eight in the morning, at the entry booth. One person stops in front of the reader and shows a badge. The door swings open and, while it is coming back, a second person walks in behind through the same gap without stopping. Neither of them is doing anything odd: they said good morning and one held the door for the other. A third person waits outside. IRIS sees two bodies going through and a single badge presented, and saves the video.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • second person through without a badge
  • person presenting the badge
  • badge at the reader
  • door reader
  • door leaf still open
  • entry booth
  • reception desk
  • person waiting outside

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 1Badges presented
  • 2People through the door
  • 1,4 sGap between the two
  • 6 sSeconds the door stayed open
  • 08:41:20Video saved from

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

two people cross through the same door and only one badge was presented

Then

  1. alert the reception desk with the door, the time and how many went through
  2. save the video of the ten seconds before and the ten after
  3. put the alert next to the access control read, so it can be checked at a glance
The instruction that set it up«Tell me when more people go through an access door than badges were presented.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for physical security on site

A data centre sells one thing before anything else: knowing who has been inside and when. If two people go through a door on a single read, the list of who is inside stops adding up, and that surfaces on audit day, not on the day it happened. IRIS accuses nobody: it counts bodies, counts reads and flags it when the two numbers disagree. What to do next — a reminder about procedure, a different kind of door, or simply a note in the record — is the security manager’s call.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know whether the second person was allowed in?

No. IRIS counts bodies and sees how many badges were presented at the reader; whose badge it was, it does not know and never will. That belongs to access control. What the camera adds is the other half: two people went through that door at 08:41 and there was one read. With both halves side by side, the check takes thirty seconds.

Isn’t holding the door for a colleague perfectly normal?

It is normal, it is polite and it happens every day. That is why the alert calls nobody suspicious and blocks nothing: it simply records that the list of who is inside does not match what went through the door. Most of them are closed in a minute, and that is exactly what should happen. What must not happen is nobody ever finding out.

Does it recognise the faces of the people coming in?

No. IRIS does not recognise faces, does not compare them with any list and does not know who anyone is. What it sees is a body crossing a gap, and how many cross. The name comes from access control and its badge, or from nobody at all. That separation is deliberate: the camera provides the fact, the other system provides the name.

And the best part

You decide the rule onceand it is applied the same way every time.

At three in the morning it means what it means at noon, on camera one and on camera four thousand. It does not depend on who is on shift, or how tired they are.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
