A wooden wedge holding the hall door wide open
Quarter past six in the morning, service corridor. The hall door is wide open and not coming back: somebody has jammed a wedge under the edge and the door closer has been left with nothing to do. From the corridor you can see the cabinets on the other side. Down the way, a cleaner is running a floor scrubber with the hose across the floor. The door has been like that for nine and a half minutes.

What IRIS understands
What it recognises in this scene
- door held open
- wedge stopping it from closing
- open doorway
- cabinets on the other side
- wall reader
- door closer left with nothing to do
- cleaning worker
- floor scrubber and hose
What this camera measures
An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.
- 9 min 30 sTime held open
- 30 sAlerts after
- 0People through since then
- 06:12Time it stopped closing
- 06:02:40Video saved from
The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.
The rule
You decide once. IRIS applies it always.
If
a hall door has been open for longer than the procedure allows
Then
- alert the guard station with the door, how long it has been open and since when
- save the video of the moment it opened and stopped closing
- repeat the alert every five minutes while it stays open
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a hall door stays open for more than thirty seconds.»
What changes
What changes for whoever answers for physical security on site
Nobody did anything wrong here. The door was wedged so somebody could get in and out with the machine, which is what anyone would do. The problem is the duration: a hall door open for half an hour stops separating two areas, and separation of areas is half of what gets audited in a data centre. IRIS is not looking for culprits and does not interrupt anyone for opening a door: it watches how long it stays open. Past the time the site sets, it asks somebody to close it. That is all, and that is enough.
What people usually ask
Doesn’t the door contact already raise an alert?
Sometimes it does. But a contact says open or closed, and not always: if the door is in maintenance mode, if the contact has drifted, or if the leaf stops halfway, the system can report a door as fine when it is not closing at all. The camera looks at the leaf. It sees that it is open, it sees a wedge underneath and it sees that nothing has changed nine minutes later. And where the contact gives an alert with no picture, here there is a video that explains the case in two seconds.
Does the alert point at whoever left it open?
No, and it should not. IRIS does not recognise faces and does not know who anyone is. The alert says which door, since when and for how long. Whoever wedged it did so in order to work, and what is needed is not a telling-off: it is for somebody to close it before it stays like that all morning. If cleaning needs that door open, the right answer is to change the procedure, not to scold anyone.
Can it be switched off during cleaning?
It can, and in many sites that is the sensible thing: you mark a time window in which that door may stand open, and the alert only fires beyond it. The rule is decided once and applied always, on every shift, with nobody having to remember to switch it on and off. That is what separates a rule from a note taped to the door.

The real interface, step by step
Everything comes in. Only what matters gets through.
This sums up what IRIS does with one alert, from the moment it appears until it is closed. The real screen holds far more; this is the main thread.
- Checks the whole system
- Flags what is failing
- Puts it on one screen
Next step
Public transport
Who watches a whole station at rush hour?
17 cases: 11 raise an alert when something happens and 6 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
Retail
Who sees the sales that never reach the till?
10 cases: 4 raise an alert when something happens and 6 only measure. You see each image as it is, and then with what IRIS understands on top.
And the best part
The door was left open at two.Finding out at nine is no use to anyone.
The video tells you at nine. IRIS says it at two, with the camera, the time and the images from that moment. The difference between the two is whether someone can go.
Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.
