That the figure is right is guaranteed by a third party, not by us: the occupancy figure you show is measured and approved, not estimated. The approval covers that measurement — counting people — not the whole product. That approval is Spanish and it isn’t equivalent to any U.S. certification: we say so up front and not at the end.

How the counting works
Counting isn’t something you ask for. You draw a line.
Two lines and three areas are drawn onto the image. The lines go where people really come in and out of the room: the gate at the back and the foot of the staircase. Each line has a direction, so crossing it inward adds and crossing it outward subtracts, and that subtraction is how many people are there right now. The areas are painted over what you want measured separately: the room, the upper tier and the ground around the post. None of this is asked for out loud. Asking is for searching and for describing a situation; counting is for measuring, and they aren’t done the same way: a line can’t be described in a sentence, it has to be traced, because the figure depends on exactly where it runs and in which direction. It’s traced once and stays there, so Tuesday’s figure and Saturday’s are measured the same way. That’s what makes the figure repeatable and auditable, and it’s why people counting can be type-approved.

What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the facility
This isn’t attendance control and it doesn’t take a roll call: it doesn’t say who is there, it says how many. The difference matters the day a wing has to be evacuated. Knowing there are thirty-one people inside and believing there are twenty-eight isn’t a nuance: it’s three people nobody is looking for. Today that number comes from counting by eye from the post and checking it afterward, and minutes go by in between. With the lines and areas in place, the duty governor has each area’s count as it stands and the curve for the whole day: what time the room fills up, how far it drops at count time and at meals, how many go up to the tier. That’s what it takes to decide how many officers cover Saturday afternoon, and to check a count without arguing about it. The figures on the illustration are an example, not any facility’s measurement.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS identify the people it counts?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store who anyone is. It counts bodies crossing a line and standing inside a drawn area. And it doesn’t replace any of the facility’s counts, nor does it take a roll call: it doesn’t say whether a particular person is in the room, it says there are thirty-one people in the room. It counts how many, not who, and that’s exactly the number you need if you have to evacuate.
Why can the facility trust that figure?
Because the measurement has been verified by an outside body. IRIS people counting is approved by the Centro Español de Metrología, Spain’s national metrology institute: the check wasn’t done by us, and that’s exactly what turns a figure into something you can defend in front of anyone. The scope is worth stating precisely: that approval covers people counting, not the whole product and no other function. It also helps that the line is drawn and not described: it’s where it is, so one wing’s figure and another’s are measured the same way. It’s a Spanish approval. What crosses over isn’t the seal, it’s the method: the same line, in the same place, every day.
Can an alert be raised if an area goes over a certain number?
Yes, and the facility sets the number. This camera measures and interrupts nobody: the counters run on their own and there’s no alert. If you also want it to warn when an area goes over a set number, that’s another rule written on top of the same camera, with its own hours and its own recipient. The rule is written by the facility: IRIS doesn’t decide how many people may be in a room and has no opinion about that number.
