What changes for whoever answers for the facility
The workshop and the service area run on a schedule: at some hours there are people working there and at others nobody should be standing around. Today that’s checked by walking through, and whoever walks through can’t be in two places at once. With hundreds of cameras in the facility and two people in the control room, this camera only gets looked at when its turn comes round or when someone already suspects something — and by then it’s late. With IRIS the alert goes out while the group is still there, not once it has gone. In an area with tools laid out on a bench, the difference between finding out at thirty seconds and finding out on the next round is a big one. Who may be there and at what hour is decided by the facility: IRIS only applies that schedule.
What people usually ask
How does IRIS know who is allowed in that area?
It does not know, and it cannot know: IRIS does not identify anyone. It does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store who anyone is. What it applies is a rule about a place and an hour, written by the facility: in this area, at this hour, nobody should be standing around. If people are, it says so; who they’re and what’s going on is for a person to look at. It can’t be used to sanction a particular person.
And on days when the workshop runs at different hours?
You change the schedule for the area, and that’s that. The rule belongs to the facility and is edited whenever the facility wants: per area, per day, per time band. That’s what keeps the alert meaningful. An alert that fires every day at the same hour for no reason stops being read within a week, and from then on the whole system is dead weight.
Can it tell me whether a group is up to something?
No, and be wary of anyone who promises you that. IRIS doesn’t predict and it doesn’t read intentions: all it says is that there’s a group of people in a place where, under the rules the facility wrote, there should be nobody at this hour. It scores nobody and it classifies nobody by how they behave. What that means is decided by the people who know the wing and the people living in it.
