What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the facility
The perimeter is hundreds of yards and a lot of cameras, and almost always nothing happens: it’s exactly the kind of picture a human eye stops seeing after twenty minutes. Today this gets discovered when someone happens to be looking at the right screen, or once it is noticed on the ground. With IRIS the alert goes out the moment someone starts up the mesh, with the exact stretch, and whoever is in the tower knows where to look. IRIS doesn’t stop an escape, and we aren’t going to claim it does: the one who decides and acts is a person. What it gives is time and a point on the map, which on a long perimeter is almost everything. And the video of the moment is kept for the report.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS identify whoever is going over?
No. IRIS does not identify anyone: it does not recognize faces, it does not compare them against any database and it does not store who anyone is. What it sees is that there’s a person where there can’t be one, and what it hands over is the stretch, the time and the video. It can’t be used to sanction a particular person: it’s there so that somebody knows where to look right now.
Can it tell a person from an animal or a bag blowing about?
It tells shape and movement apart, which is why a bag dragged by the wind and a person climbing the mesh don’t read the same. Even so, no system is right every time, and we aren’t going to tell you otherwise. The alert closes nothing and triggers nothing: it puts the picture in front of a person so they can decide in two seconds, which is exactly what doesn’t happen today.
Does it work for what comes in, not just for what goes out?
Yes. The rule is about the fence, not about the direction of travel: to the camera, someone up on the mesh is the same thing whichever way they’re heading. And on a perimeter it isn’t always a person that crosses; the stretch being watched is the same one, and the person who reviews the video decides what each thing is.
