Someone on the floor of the wing

What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the facility
A person on the floor may have fallen, fainted, collapsed from the heat, or been in a fight that’s already over. From a camera you can’t tell which of the four it is, and it doesn’t matter: in all four, the thing that counts is the same — how long it takes for someone to get there. Today that depends on an officer walking the wing, or on another person inside raising the alarm. With IRIS the alert goes out while the person is still on the floor, with the camera and the spot, and whoever is in the control room can see the video before setting off. This treats nobody and replaces no medical staff: it only shortens the wait until someone is standing there. When a heart stops, that wait is all there is.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know who the person on the floor is?
No, and it doesn’t need to. IRIS does not recognize faces, does not compare them against any database, does not store who anyone is and keeps no record on any person inside. What it detects is a situation: someone is on the floor and hasn’t moved for a while. Whoever arrives sees who it is; the system doesn’t. That’s why this camera is no use for disciplining anyone: it’s there so that somebody gets down there sooner.
What if somebody sits or lies down on the floor and nothing is wrong?
It happens, and that’s why the rule has a clock inside it. The facility decides how many seconds or minutes without movement must pass before the alert goes out, and it can set that differently per wing and per time of day. If the alert fires every time someone sits on the floor, within a week nobody looks at it, and then it isn’t there on the day it is needed. One alert too many is closed in ten seconds by looking at the video; one alert too few can’t be got back.
Does this replace the officers’ rounds?
No. The round is still the round, and the person who decides what to do and who attends to the individual is an officer, never a camera. The only thing that changes is when they find out: between two rounds there’s a stretch of time nobody knows about today, and that stretch is exactly what this camera covers. IRIS raises the alert; everything else is done by a person.
