The operator is checking the packing slip in front of the trailer, back turned, and six feet from him a person is tucked in under the chassis, between the wheels. For the person in charge of port security this doesn’t start as a control problem: it’s a human being who can be crushed the moment the truck pulls away, or shut inside a unit for hours. Today it’s only found if somebody thinks to bend down and look before boarding. With the camera, the alert arrives while the vehicle is still parked and the move can still be stopped. Does IRIS identify the person who got underneath?
No. IRIS does not recognize faces and does not compare them with any database. It detects a situation: there’s a person under a vehicle, in an area where nobody should be. What it delivers is the camera, the time and the video. Who that person is, and what happens next, is decided by port staff, with the protocols they already have and with the competent authority.
Why is this an emergency and not just a control problem?
Because a person under a chassis can die there. The moment the truck pulls away they’re under the wheels, and if they end up inside a closed unit they can spend days with no air, no water and nobody knowing they’re there. That’s why the value of the alert is in its timing: it arrives while the vehicle is still parked, not once it has boarded and nothing can be done.
Can IRIS see someone hidden inside a closed container?
No. A camera sees what’s in view: someone approaching the unit, going underneath it or stepping in through an open door. Once the doors are shut, no image helps, and that’s where the port’s inspection means come in, such as scanning or gas detection. IRIS covers the moment before, which is exactly when it can still be prevented.
