Seeing the flare is no achievement: the whole venue sees it. What nobody has is the block, the row and the exact second it was lit, with the video beside it. That is what supports a sanction, what lets you send two people to one spot instead of to a whole block, and what saves having to stop a concert because nobody knows where to look. Does IRIS identify whoever lights the flare?
No. IRIS recognises no faces and names nobody. It detects a flame and a column of smoke in a spectator area, and says which block and which row. Who lit it comes, if it comes at all, from the video a person reviews and from the staff who get there. The camera provides the place and the minute, which is what nobody has today.
Does it tell a flare apart from a stage smoke machine?
Yes, if the venue sets it up. Stage smoke always comes from the same place at the same time, and that area is left out of the rule. What the camera looks for is an intense point of light appearing suddenly in a seating area and the smoke rising right above it. Even so, the one who confirms is the person watching the video.
Is it any use for detecting a real fire?
It helps, but it does not replace the fire detection system. A camera sees smoke and flame the moment they appear in the image, and in an open venue that arrives sooner than a ceiling detector. Fire protection is a legal requirement and still governs: IRIS works alongside it and adds the picture and the exact minute.
