What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the terminal

For the reefer supervisor, a door left open for twenty minutes can cost the whole load, and the insurer will ask about it. Today he finds out when the unit logs the temperature rise, which is always later. With the camera he has the minute the door was opened, the minute the cable ended up on the ground and the video of what was being done there. That is what turns a claim into a file that holds up.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS measure the temperature inside the container?

No. The temperature comes from the reefer’s own system, which has its probe inside, and that reading does not come from a camera. IRIS sees what shows from the outside: the open door, the cable on the ground and how long it has been like that. The two are read together: the unit says how far it rose, and the camera says from what minute and with which door open.

And with a thermal camera?

A thermal camera reads the heat you can see from outside: a housing warming up, a cooling unit that has stopped and is no longer venting. It is still not the temperature of the cargo, which sits inside a closed, insulated box. Where you need the exact figure for the goods, you need the container’s probe or a measurement at destination. The camera supplies the alert and the time.

Can it tell whether the technician had a work order?

Not on its own, and it does not identify anyone either. IRIS sees that a door is open at a particular time. If the terminal cross-checks that alert against its list of work orders, the question answers itself: there was an order or there was not. That cross-check is done by the terminal’s system; IRIS supplies the image and the exact minute.
