Black smoke over the yard and liquid spreading across the ground

Midday in the yard. Black smoke is coming from behind a heavy machine standing next to a container. On the ground in front of it, a dark liquid is spreading and following the slope. Four workers in hi-vis have pulled back and have already put out cones and barriers; an emergency vehicle is coming in. The emergency route is painted on the ground, on the right. IRIS sees the smoke and the liquid moving, and which way it is going. What the product is, the person looking says.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • black smoke over the yard
  • liquid spreading across the ground
  • heavy machine at a standstill
  • container next to the machine
  • worker on foot beside the spill
  • emergency route painted on the ground

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 2 minTime with smoke in view
  • 4People on foot in the area
  • 24 mDistance from the liquid to the quay edge
  • 1Emergency vehicles in the area
  • 12:18Time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

smoke appears in the yard, a liquid spreads across the ground or a vehicle stays inside the emergency route

Then

  1. alert the emergency officer with the camera, the spot and the time
  2. save the video from the first frame with smoke in it
  3. show the emergency route on the same screen, and whether it is clear
The instruction that set it up«Tell me the moment there is smoke in the yard or a liquid spilling across the ground, and tell me whether the emergency route is clear.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the terminal

In a port, a liquid that reaches the water stops being a clean-up job and becomes an environmental case, with inspectors and deadlines. What changes the outcome is the minute: containing the spill before the quay edge or after it. The emergency officer gets the alert with the camera, the direction the liquid is travelling and the video from the first smoke. And if the emergency route is blocked, he knows that too before he sends anyone in.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know what is burning or what has spilled?

No. A camera sees smoke, colour, volume and which way a liquid is running. What the product is, the person looking says, with the cargo paperwork and the location in front of them. That is precisely what makes the alert useful: it arrives with the image and the exact spot, so the person who knows what is in that row decides on what they can see, not on what comes over the radio.

Does it detect a fire before there are flames?

Yes, with a caveat. With an ordinary camera IRIS sees the smoke, which almost always comes before the flame. With a thermal camera you can also read the hot spot that is not burning yet: a motor, a brake, a battery. That is not a prediction: it is heat that is already there and can be seen. What no camera does is detect a gas with no smoke; that needs a gas detector.

Can it be used to keep the emergency route clear?

Yes, and it is one of the simplest rules to write. The route is usually painted on the ground, so you draw that polygon once and IRIS raises an alert when a vehicle or a load stays inside it for longer than agreed. It is not a fire alarm: it is a standing check that, on the day it matters, the fire crews will be able to get in.

See it for yourself

No extra alarms here. Just what needs looking at.

Not a recorded video, not an explanatory drawing: a summary of the real screen, with a different case every time it starts. There is a lot more behind it.

And the best part

No building work, no trenches, no new cabling:the cameras are already up and already looking.

What changes is what happens to the picture. It used to be stored and never seen; now it is understood while it happens, on the same equipment you bought years ago.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
