What changes for whoever answers for the plant
A cut from glass or a needlestick on the belt is the injury that comes back most often in a sorting plant, and it gives no warning: it just happens. The alert arrives while the person is still at the station, not in tomorrow’s report. And it is worth saying plainly: IRIS sees that the kit is missing, it does not see who the person is. It does not recognise faces or match them against any list. What reaches the supervisor is that this station has no helmet and no gloves.

Does IRIS know who the person without a helmet is?
No. It does not recognise faces and it does not match them against any database. What it detects is a situation: at the belt station somebody is working without a helmet and without gloves. Who that is, the supervisor knows, because he is there and knows them. That difference is not a technical detail: it is the line between a safety tool and a way of monitoring people.
Does it work for every piece of protective kit?
Yes for the ones you can see from outside: helmet, hi-vis, gloves, glasses, mask and ear defenders. No for what the camera cannot see: whether the footwear under the trousers is safety footwear, or whether the filter inside a mask is the right one — an image does not confirm that. Where a physical check is needed, a physical check is needed.
Isn’t this just watching the worker?
Yes, it is a camera pointed at a workplace, and that has to be said plainly. What matters is what is done with the image: it looks at whether kit is missing, not at who is wearing it; it keeps no file per person; the alert goes to the line supervisor and not to human resources; and what counts as an alert is decided by the plant with its safety committee, not by IRIS. Without those four conditions, it should not be installed.
