Mid-afternoon, the supervisor has been on the truck scale for two hours and nobody has walked past the front belt. On a belt carrying glass, cans and needles, a cut or a puncture gives no warning: it just happens. With IRIS the alert arrives while the person is still at the station, not in tomorrow’s report. And this is worth saying plainly: IRIS sees that the kit is missing, it does not see who anybody is. It does not recognize faces or match them against any list. What reaches the supervisor is that a hard hat and gloves are missing at that station.

Does IRIS know who the person without a hard hat is?
No. It does not recognize faces and it does not match them against any database. What it detects is a situation: at the belt station somebody is working without a hard hat and without gloves. Who that is, the supervisor knows, because he is there and knows them. That difference isn’t a technical detail: it’s the line between a safety tool and a way of monitoring people.
Does it work for every piece of protective kit?
Yes for the ones you can see from outside: hard hat, a safety vest, gloves, glasses, mask and ear defenders. No for what the camera can’t see: whether the footwear under the pants is safety footwear, or whether the filter inside a mask is the right one — an image doesn’t confirm that. Where a physical check is needed, a physical check is needed.
Isn’t this just watching the worker?
Yes, it’s a camera pointed at a workplace, and that has to be said plainly. What matters is what’s done with the image: it looks at whether kit is missing, not at who is wearing it; it keeps no file per person; the alert goes to the line supervisor and not to human resources; and what counts as an alert is decided by the plant with its safety committee, not by IRIS. Without those four conditions, it shouldn’t be installed.
