What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

Mid-morning, and the quality operator has been pulling contaminants out by hand from the walkway since six. Whoever sells the material is working blind: he knows the bale carries contaminants, but not how many. Counting on the belt turns that into a number per hour and per shift, measured the same way every time and with the video behind it. With that number the line is adjusted the same day, the buyer is shown where the price comes from and it becomes clear which supplier sends the dirtiest material. It stops being an argument and becomes data.

What people usually ask

Can the contamination count be shown to the buyer?

Yes. Counting is set up by drawing a stretch on the image, and that stretch doesn’t move: every hour is measured in exactly the same way. The result is a figure per hour, per shift and per day, with the video behind it. It can go into a sheet and be defended in front of whoever buys the material, because it has always been counted at the same place and in the same way.

Why is counting drawn while an alert is asked for in words?

Because a line can’t be described in a sentence: it has to be drawn. Asking is for finding. Counting is for measuring. And they aren’t done the same way. An alert is set up by writing what you want to be told about, in your own words. A count is set up by marking on the image where the counting happens, and that’s why the figure comes out the same today as in six months.

Does IRIS know whether the material is contaminated inside?

No. The camera sees what can be seen: a plastic bag among the cardboard, a container with liquid, a textile. Paper moisture, a chemical residue or what’s inside a closed container don’t show up in the image, and that’s what a laboratory analysis is for. IRIS provides the count of what’s visible, with the image and the exact minute, and it works alongside the plant quality systems, not instead of them.
