A glass bottle is riding down the paper and card line

Mid-morning in the picking hall. Card and paper are coming down the left-hand belt; cans and plastic bottles down the right-hand one. In among the cardboard travels a green glass bottle, unbroken. The glass skip is three metres away, beside the line, and the plastic and residual skips are opposite. Five people are working on the two belts. IRIS recognises the material that does not belong to that fraction.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • glass bottle on the paper line
  • paper and card line
  • glass skip, where it should have gone
  • plastic skip
  • picker on the paper belt

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 10:48Time of the alert
  • 6Missorted items in the last hour
  • 19Missorted items this shift
  • 5People on the two belts
  • 7 minTime since the previous item

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a material from another fraction goes past on the paper and card line

Then

  1. alert the line supervisor with the camera, the time and a picture of the item
  2. add the item to the hourly and shift count
  3. save the video of that stretch of belt so it can be reviewed later
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if glass or metal goes past on the paper and card line, and keep the count for me by the hour.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

A glass bottle in the paper bales is money: it wrecks blades, it drops the purity of the bale and the buyer pays less or sends it back. With the camera, the line supervisor stops arguing from memory: he knows how many missorted items go past per hour, on which belt and at what point in the shift. It is a repeatable number, and a number is what you take to the material buyer and to the council.

What people usually ask

Is this an alert or a count?

Both, and they are not set up the same way. Asking is for finding: a sentence describes which material must not pass on that belt. Counting is for measuring, and it is set up by drawing a line on the picture, which is why the number comes out the same every time and can be audited. The same camera reports today’s bottle and keeps the hourly, shift and monthly tally.

Is that number good enough to negotiate with the material buyer?

Yes, as long as it is always counted the same way. Counting across a drawn line gives a repeatable figure: same cameras, same line, same criterion, day after day. That can be shown and argued over. What it cannot be is extrapolated: the number belongs to that belt and that period, and that is how it has to be presented.

And if the plant accepts some glass in the paper?

Then the rule says so and IRIS does not report every single item. What counts as an alert is the plant’s decision, not the camera’s: it can be set to report only above a certain rate, only on one belt or only on one shift. IRIS applies what it has been given, keeps counting anyway and stores the picture so it can be reviewed.

A different case every time

We won't just tell you. We'll show you.

It is a summary of the real screen: it plays by itself, step by step, and shows only the path of one case. The actual tool has far more than fits in here.

And the best part

Counting is not watching over anyone. It is knowing how many went through, and when.

It is what lets you compare: two Tuesdays, two doors, two seasons. Because it is measured the same way every day, the comparison stands on its own.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
