What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
For the quality manager, a chemical drum on the packaging line is two problems at once: somebody is going to pick it up by hand, and the whole batch stops being sellable. With the camera he knows how many turn up, at what time and on which round, and he can take it to the council that sends them. He is left with a picture of every container, not a complaint with nothing behind it. What it actually is, the analysis will say.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know what is inside the drum?
No. IRIS recognises the container by how it looks: the shape, the colour and the pictogram stuck on it. What is inside comes from the label or the lab analysis, never from the picture. For sorting that is already enough: a drum with a hazard pictogram has no business on a household waste belt, whatever it holds.
And if the container is empty?
IRIS reports it just the same, and that is how it should be. An empty paint tin still carries residue, an empty drum can hold vapour and an empty clinical bag is never quite empty. The camera sees the container, not the contents. The plant decides in the rule whether that kind of container is always pulled out or only in certain streams.
Can you tell which round that waste came in on?
Yes, by matching times. IRIS records the exact minute of every alert along with the picture of the container; with the tipping time of each truck, the plant can work out which load brought the material in. IRIS identifies nobody: it supplies the time and the picture, and it is the plant that cross-checks that against its collection records.
