A lithium battery is riding the belt towards the shredder

Mid-morning at the civic amenity site. A collection truck has just tipped its load and household waste is riding the sorting belt up towards the picking hall. In among the bags, cartons and packaging travels a black battery from an e-scooter. The operator watching the tip has his back turned and the man on the walkway is looking at the belt from above. IRIS recognises the shape of the battery on its way up and reports it before it reaches the shredder.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • lithium battery on the belt
  • sorting belt loaded with household waste
  • collection truck tipping its load
  • operator watching the tip
  • belt operator on the walkway

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 11:42Time of the alert
  • 9 sTime the battery has been in shot
  • 4Batteries flagged this shift
  • 2People in shot
  • 7Truck tips counted today

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a battery, an electronic device or a scooter appears on the household waste belt

Then

  1. alert the control room and the belt operator with the camera and the time
  2. save the video from the truck tipping its load up to the alert
  3. keep the alert open until a person confirms the battery is out
The instruction that set it up«Alert me the moment you see a battery, a phone or a scooter on the sorting belt, before it reaches the shredder.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

A lithium battery in the household stream is the leading cause of fire in a waste plant; everyone in the trade knows it. Crushed inside the shredder there is no warning left to give, only smoke. For the plant manager the value sits in the minute before: stop the belt, lift the battery out with a grab and carry on working. And the video of the truck that brought it stays, with the exact time of the tip.

What people usually ask

Why is a battery on the belt so urgent?

Because after that it is a fire. A lithium battery crushed inside the shredder ignites, and a waste plant is fuel from wall to wall. It is the leading cause of fire in the sector. IRIS sees it on its way up the belt and reports it with the camera, the time and the video, so there is time to stop and take it out. What happens next is the plant’s decision, not the camera’s.

Does IRIS tell a lithium battery apart from an ordinary one?

It sees the shape, not the chemistry. IRIS recognises the look of a battery, a phone, a cordless tool or a scooter in a stream where none of them belong. Whether it is lithium or not comes from the label, or from whoever lifts it off the belt. For what matters here it makes no difference: none of those things should enter the shredder, and the plant writes the rule.

Does IRIS identify the truck or the person who threw the battery away?

No. IRIS does not recognise faces and does not match anyone against any database. It detects situations: a battery on the belt, at a specific time. What it does keep is the video of the tip before it, and from that the plant can work out which load brought the material in. Who it was, and what to do about it, is decided by a person using their own collection records.

And the best part

What you bought was a warehouse of images. What you needed was someone to look at them.

Those same cameras that only fill disks today can flag what matters while it is happening. The warehouse stays; it just stops being all you have.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
