A pressurised vessel does not break when it is crushed: it bursts. It takes out the rolls, the guarding and whoever is standing nearby, and the plant is down for days. For the maintenance manager the difference lies in the seconds the cylinder takes to cross the feed mouth. IRIS reports it while it is still coming down the belt, with the picture and the exact second, and a person decides whether to stop the line. The camera does not stop it.

Does IRIS know whether the cylinder is full or empty?
No. The camera sees the container, not what is inside it. It recognises the shape of a cylinder, an aerosol or a cartridge and reports that it is on its way to the shredder. Full, empty or purged is what the label says, or the person who lifts it off the belt. For the rule it makes no difference: no pressurised container goes into the shredder mouth.
Can IRIS stop the line by itself?
No, and it should not. IRIS reports: it sends the camera, the time and the picture to the panel operator and the control room. Stopping a sorting line has consequences — jams, queues of trucks, half-processed material — and that call is made by a person with the information in front of them. The plant also decides what counts as an alert: IRIS applies the rule it has been given.
Can the same camera count how many cylinders arrive in a month?
Yes, but it is a different set-up. Alerting is asked for in words: a sentence describes what must not happen. Counting is set up by drawing a line or a zone on the picture, and that is why the number is repeatable and auditable. A line cannot be described in a sentence: it has to be drawn. One camera can do both: report today’s cylinder and keep the month’s tally.
