On a device line the failure is rarely dramatic: a missing part, a cap that never clicked home, a unit jammed sideways in the curve. It shows for a second and it is gone. An eye gets tired; a camera looks at every unit of the shift with the same attention, alerts as it happens and keeps the image of that unit. What has to be proven on the inside, such as dose or firing force, is still a laboratory test.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS check that the autoinjector works?
No. A camera sees the outside of the unit: a missing part, something misaligned, a unit that has stopped. Dose, firing force and sterility are proven by testing, not by an image. IRIS alerts on what is visible from the outside and keeps the picture of that unit together with its time stamp.
Does IRIS replace the operator who inspects the line?
No. IRIS watches the same stretch all the time, without tiring and without looking away, and raises an alert when it sees something that does not fit. What gets pulled and what does not is decided by a person, following rules the plant writes. IRIS neither writes those rules nor acts on the machine: it provides the alert and the image.
Can the same camera count how many units go through?
Yes, but it is set up differently. Asking is for finding and counting is for measuring, and they are not done the same way: an alert is written as a sentence, a count is drawn as a line on the image. You cannot describe a line in words, you have to draw it, and that is why the number comes out the same every time.
