Hands inside the mixer with the beacon still green
Mid-morning in the mixing room. The side door of the mixer is open and an operator has both hands inside the bowl, touching the product. On top of the machine and on the control panel, the beacon is still lit green: the equipment is available. There is no padlock fitted and no tag hanging from the switch. What changes
What changes for whoever answers for the plant
These things come to light once they have already happened. Somebody opens the machine for a minute to scrape off a crust, the beacon stays green and nobody hears about it until there is a scare. With the camera, the shift supervisor gets the alert while the door is still open, with the picture and the minute. And at the end of the month there is a count: how many times that machine was opened with no padlock, on which shift and on which line. That can be fixed.
What people usually ask
Does IRIS know whether the machine is really locked out?
Not entirely. IRIS sees what can be seen: the open door, the hands inside, the green beacon, and whether or not a padlock hangs on the switch. Whether the power is really cut is told by the plant electrical system, not by the camera. That is why the rule is written on what is visible and the alert arrives with the picture: whoever gets it can check in a second whether the lockout is on.
Can IRIS stop the mixer?
No. IRIS does not command any machine: it alerts. The order to stop, to cut the power or to send somebody is given by a person, with the alert in front of them. It is built that way on purpose: whoever knows the plant decides, and the camera supplies the picture and the exact minute it started. A system that acts on its own gets it wrong on its own.
And what if the opening was authorised?
Then it is not an alert, and the rule says so. What counts as an alert and what does not is decided by the plant: you can ask it to fire only outside maintenance windows, or only when no padlock is in view. IRIS does not write the rules, it applies them and leaves the count of how many times it happened, with time and video.
