CAM-303

The tanker is still connected and nobody is watching it

Midday at the transfer point. The tanker is chocked, with the black hose coupled to the valve of the white container standing on the yellow bund. Everything is rigged and set. What is missing from the shot is a person: not by the tanker, not by the container, not at the pump skid behind. IRIS cannot see whether liquid is flowing; what it can do is time how long the hose has been connected with nobody in front of it.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • hose connected with nobody in front of it
  • container receiving the transfer
  • tanker chocked at the transfer point
  • containment bund under the container
  • pump skid in the background

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 1 h 12 minTime the hose has been connected
  • 48 minTime with nobody in the area
  • 0People in shot
  • 10:26Time the last person was seen
  • 1Vehicles in shot

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a hose has been connected for longer than allowed and there is nobody in the area

Then

  1. alert the shift supervisor with the camera and how many minutes it has been alone
  2. save the video of the moment the last person left
  3. keep counting until somebody comes back to the area
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a hose has been connected for more than twenty minutes with nobody in the area.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

A transfer left to itself is the most common way to end up with an overflowing container and a full bund. It is almost never gross carelessness: somebody goes to fetch a document and it drags on. With the camera, the shift supervisor gets an alert at the number of minutes he set himself, with the time the hose was connected and the time the last person was seen. It gets fixed before the overflow, not after.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know whether liquid is actually flowing?

No. The camera sees the hose connected, the container and whether anybody is standing there. Whether flow is running is what the flow meter or the weighbridge tells you. That is why the rule does not talk about litres: it talks about minutes with the hose on and about people present. A camera counts and times that well, and it is exactly what is missing when a transfer drags on.

How many minutes have to pass before it alerts?

Whatever the plant says. A twenty-minute unload and a two-hour one are not watched the same way, and the threshold is written per transfer point. IRIS times from the first second and alerts on reaching the agreed minute. If the alert comes too early or too late, the number changes and the effect shows up on the next shift.

Does it recognise which operator walked away?

No. IRIS does not identify anybody and does not compare faces with anything. It detects situations: «there is a person in the area» or «there is nobody». The alert says the hose has been connected for forty minutes with nobody in front of it, not who should have been there. Who was on duty is in the shift log, not in the camera.

The real interface, step by step

A camera looks. IRIS understands what it sees.

An extract of the real screen, no voice-over and hands-free. Each round poses another situation. What sits behind it is a good deal bigger than what you see.

  1. You draw the line
  2. It counts by itself
  3. A number comes out

And the best part

A whole afternoon in front of a screennow fits into one written sentence.

The video has not changed: it is all still there, in the same place. What has changed is that you can ask it questions, and the answer comes with its camera and its time.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
