CAM-311

Sparks a step away from the flammable drums and nobody keeping watch

End of the afternoon in the loading area. A worker behind a welding shield is cutting a steel section on a trestle and the sparks fly a long way across the floor. A couple of metres away sit a pallet with four red flammable drums, a white tote carrying the flame diamond and two blue drums. Behind them, a process tank and its pipework. Nobody else is in frame: the person who should be watching the job is not there.

CAM-311 · HOT WORK AREA · NO FIRE WATCH

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • sparks from the cut
  • worker cutting
  • flammable drums
  • tote with the flame diamond
  • cutting set and gas cylinder
  • process tank

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 9 mintime with sparks
  • 1people in the area
  • 7drums and totes nearby
  • 18:31time the second person left
  • 18:40time of the alert

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

there are sparks beside flammable containers and only one person is visible in the area

Then

  1. alerts the safety officer and the shift lead
  2. saves the video from the first spark
  3. logs the time and how long the area has had only one person in it
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if there are sparks near the drums and I can only see one person in the area.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

Hot work is one of the few permits that comes with a person whose job is simply to watch. When that person steps away for five minutes to fetch a tool, nobody notices and the permit stops meaning anything. IRIS does not judge the permit: it sees the sparks, it sees the drums beside them and it sees how long only one person has been in the area. With that, the supervisor decides whether to go down. And the time he was left alone is on record.

What people usually ask

Can IRIS know whether there is a hot work permit?

No. A camera does not read a permit and does not know what was signed in the office. What it sees is the scene: sparks, flammable containers next to them and how many people are present. If the plant requires two people for that kind of job, IRIS raises the alert when it only sees one. Whether the permit is valid is decided by whoever signs it.

Does it tell sparks apart from a reflection or a light?

Yes, in the way that matters here: the rule does not fire on a single glint, but on a spray of sparks that lasts and happens where somebody is working. Even so, it is the plant that tunes what counts as an alert in that area. And every alert arrives with the video, so it can be checked in two seconds.

Does IRIS recognise who the fire watch is?

No. IRIS does not identify anyone and does not compare faces against any list. It counts how many people are inside the monitored area and raises the alert if the number does not meet what the plant asked for. Who each person is belongs to the permit and to the supervisor; the camera only contributes how many there are and since when.

It is a summary of the real screen: it plays by itself, step by step, and shows only the path of one case. The actual tool has far more than fits in here.

And the best part

What you bought was a warehouse of images. What you needed was someone to look at them.

Those same cameras that only fill disks today can flag what matters while it is happening. The warehouse stays; it just stops being all you have.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
