Smoke coming off a battery pack in the middle of the aisle

Mid-afternoon in the battery pack area. A pack sitting on a silver trolley, stopped in the middle of the aisle, is throwing up a grey column of smoke that reaches the roof of the hall. Around it people are backing off: one walks away to the left, another has stopped at a distance beside the control cabinet, a colleague steps back on the right. IRIS sees the smoke from the first wisp and starts timing from that second.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • column of smoke above the pack
  • battery pack on the trolley
  • transport trolley in the aisle
  • operator walking away from the trolley
  • colleague stepping back to a distance

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 40 sTime since the first wisp
  • 14:07Time of the first smoke
  • 7People in shot
  • 5Pack trolleys in the area
  • 3People who have moved away from the trolley

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

smoke appears above a pack trolley in the aisle

Then

  1. alert the control room and the area manager with the camera
  2. save the video from thirty seconds before the first wisp
  3. time it from the first second and put the hour in the record
The instruction that set it up«Tell me the moment smoke comes off a pack in the trolley area, however little, and put the camera in front of me.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

In a battery area the first seconds are everything. The difference between somebody noticing in passing and an alert with camera, time and video is how long it takes to clear the aisle and get help there. IRIS puts out nothing and sends nobody: it warns the person who has to decide and gives them the exact trolley and the minute the smoke started. That is also the first thing the report asks for the next day.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know what is happening inside the cell?

No. A camera sees the smoke that comes out, and with a thermal camera it reads the heat you can see from outside. What happens inside the cell is what the battery management system reports. IRIS adds what that system lacks: the picture of the exact trolley, the aisle around it, and the minute the smoke started.

Does it replace the fire detector?

No, and it should not. The detector and the fire system stay in charge: they are designed and tested for that. IRIS watches the aisle, which is where a roof detector takes longest because the smoke has to climb, and it alerts with a picture of the exact spot. It works alongside, not instead of.

Does IRIS cut the power or trigger the suppression system?

No. IRIS alerts, it does not act: it cuts nothing, triggers nothing and sends nobody anywhere. A person decides that, with the picture in front of them. What the camera changes is that the person finds out while it is happening, not five minutes later down the aisle.

See it for yourself

A camera looks. IRIS understands what it sees.

An extract of the real screen, no voice-over and hands-free. Each round poses another situation. What sits behind it is a good deal bigger than what you see.

  2. Reads the characters
  3. Follows the same plate

And the best part

Adding a camera costs what it costs;adding someone to watch it costs every single month.

Past a certain number, almost nobody is watching anything. IRIS watches them all at once and only calls you when something you said mattered happens in one of them.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
