A connector left unmated on the line

Afternoon shift on the trim line. A silver body moves along with the tailgate and the bonnet open. A branch of the wiring harness hangs loose down the left flank and a white connector has been left out of its housing: it is not mated. The operator working right in front of it will carry on fitting, and the trim panel will cover that spot at the next station. A blue trolley of spare harnesses waits alongside. IRIS sees the loose connector while it can still be seen.

What IRIS understands

What it recognises in this scene

  • white connector left unmated
  • harness branch hanging loose
  • operator fitting on the flank
  • tailgate standing open
  • harness trolley beside the line
  • colleague working at the front door

What this camera measures

An alert says something is happening. The reading says how much.

  • 1Connectors left unmated
  • 2 minTime since the alert
  • 1 min 40 sTime the body has been at the station
  • 3People in shot
  • 3Connector alerts this shift

The figures on this screen are an example from the illustration, not any client's measurement.

The rule

You decide once. IRIS applies it always.

If

a harness connector is still out of its housing and the body is about to leave the station

Then

  1. alert the next station with the camera, the time and the station number
  2. save the video of the harness fitting from the moment the body arrived
  3. attach the picture of the loose connector to that unit’s record
The instruction that set it up«Tell me if a connector is left unmated on the flank before the trim panel goes on.»

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

An unmated connector does not show up on the line: it shows up on the electrical test bench or, worse, in the workshop, with the trim already fitted. For the assembly manager the whole difference is in the minute. If the alert arrives while the body is still at the station, it gets mated and the line moves on. If it arrives later, somebody has to strip the trim out again. The station video makes clear which unit it was, at what time, and which harness was being fitted.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know whether a connector has clicked home?

No. IRIS sees position: if the connector is out of its housing and the branch is hanging, that is visible and it raises an alert. The click of the lock and the electrical continuity are confirmed by the test bench or the station tool, not by a camera. What the image adds is the exact minute and the view of the station, so somebody gets there before the trim panel covers the spot.

What if the operator mates it right afterwards?

The alert closes with a picture. IRIS keeps watching the same spot: when the connector shows up seated, that unit’s record ends up with both images, the problem and the fix, each with its own timestamp. Nobody has to write anything by hand, and the next shift sees what happened without asking around.

Does the harness have to change, or sensors be added?

No. The camera looks at the same station as always and works with the picture that is already there. Nothing changes on the harness, the connector or the station tool. If the station already has an electrical check, IRIS does not replace it: it adds the image of the moment, which is exactly what is missing when somebody asks what happened on that unit.

This isn’t a video. It’s a slice of the real screen.

A summary of the real interface, played hands-free. You see one case from start to finish; what you do not see are the other screens, and there are many.

  1. The rule gets built
  2. It goes to every camera
  3. Published, it watches alone
  4. And then it fires

And the best part

What happens outside the framedoes not exist for IRIS. No camera sees the whole world.

So the first thing we do is check what each camera covers and write it down: from here you can understand this, and not that. A dull hour that saves a lot of misunderstandings.

Tell us your problem and we will say whether IRIS understands it, or not yet.

We reply the same working day.
