Smoke coming off a battery pack in the middle of the aisle

Mid-afternoon in the battery pack area. A pack sitting on a silver cart, stopped in the middle of the aisle, is throwing up a gray column of smoke that reaches the roof of the hall. Around it people are backing off: one walks away to the left, another has stopped at a distance beside the control cabinet, a colleague steps back on the right. IRIS sees the smoke from the first wisp and starts timing from that second.

What changes

What changes for whoever answers for the plant

Twenty past four in the afternoon, and the forklift driver crossing the battery-pack aisle is the only one who can see the first wisp. If he is looking straight ahead, the smoke has been rising for two minutes by the time anyone reports it. Those two minutes are how long it takes to clear the aisle and get help there. IRIS puts out nothing and sends nobody: it warns the person who has to decide, with camera, time and video, and gives them the exact cart and the minute the smoke started. That’s also the first thing the report asks for the next day.

What people usually ask

Does IRIS know what’s happening inside the cell?

No. A camera sees the smoke that comes out, and with a thermal camera it reads the heat you can see from outside. What happens inside the cell is what the battery management system reports. IRIS adds what that system lacks: the picture of the exact cart, the aisle around it, and the minute the smoke started.

Does it replace the fire detector?

No, and it shouldn’t. The detector and the fire system stay in charge: they’re designed and tested for that. IRIS watches the aisle, which is where a roof detector takes longest because the smoke has to climb, and it alerts with a picture of the exact spot. It works alongside, not instead of.

Does IRIS cut the power or trigger the suppression system?

No. IRIS alerts, it doesn’t act: it cuts nothing, triggers nothing and sends nobody anywhere. A person decides that, with the picture in front of them. What the camera changes is that the person finds out while it’s happening, not five minutes later down the aisle.
